Memory Thresholds

Team: Sebastian Escobar, Alberto Sarria, Juan Roman, Cassandra vargas

This is a project that is the continuation of the collaboration between the Universidad Iberoamericana and the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Bogota. The theme that was proposed to be developed was "challenges and opportunities of informal settlements,"  as in the La Pedrera project; however, in this case, the project takes place in Mexico City. The study sector is San Mateo Tlatenango, one of the towns that, due to the growth of Mexico City, is now part of its metropolitan area.

In this case, it is important to highlight the historical significance behind this town since it is defined as a native town, which means that it already existed before the arrival of the Spaniards, and in the collective memory, this is a fact that defines them as a community, in addition to the fact that this implies that it has its own culture that is related to the other settlements that took place around this population.

By using the methodology of social mapping, it was possible to understand how the people of the community understood their territory, starting from the fact that they conceive a large number of social barriers that they themselves created based on their condition as native people, in addition to socio-economic facts that make the relationship with other communities somewhat difficult. However,  these barriers become a little permeable during the festivities, especially those of a religious nature.
