Territory as Palimpsest: Mariquita Natural Environment and Urban Values

Team: Sebastian Escobar, Andrea Carolina Sanchez, Maria Alejandra Valbuena.

The project is developed based on the question, what would be an ideal territory?, this based on the need to create a regional development plan for the middle Magdalena area (from La Dorada to Girardot) with the city of Honda as its epicenter, located in Tolima, Colombia. For which a basic concept is taken to develop and structure the entire regional plan, for purposes of this study is used the “Palimpsesto”, understood as that ancient manuscript which retains traces of an earlier writing on which something new is written. What is intended is that the territory/manuscript be understood and transformed through its patrimonies and cultural values (the traces).

Therefore, when transposing this concept to the region of study, the necessary reading of the territory from a historical perspective becomes evident. It is important to be clear about the facts, events and different forms of occupation that have transformed and made the territory, in order to make desicions in the present. A territory like palimpsest is not only an expression of local dynamics, it also allows us to read the regional and the global.

Finally, three specific projects are being carried out in the study region, which are in Honda, Ambalema and Mariquita. Each one of these with a specific approach related to heritage, for this case a project is developed that has as main axis the natural heritage that has defined the town of Mariquita throughout its history.
