Honda, Territory of Living Memory: Generation of New Urban Dynamics From its Patrimonial Elements

Team: Sebastian Escobar

The work focuses on the study of the city of Honda, located in the department of Tolima, Colombia. For this, it was decided to approach the research from three fields: architecture, urbanism, and patrimony, understanding the last one as a tool for the development and planning of the city on an urban scale.

In the first instance, it started by compiling all the historical information about the city and observing how the urban area grew from the time of the conquest to the period of the Republic and the present. Additionally, it was defined and analyzed as the specific facts or "fractures" that positively or negatively transformed Honda's urban fabric. These changes are also analyzed on a regional scale, understanding that the territory's dynamics had a direct impact on the evolution of the old port.

Subsequently, observing the current situation of the city, it proceeds to use the research method of urban phenomena, which allows for the understanding and definition of the transformations that occurred and are currently occurring in the territory. In this way, the different problems on an urban scale were defined, which for this study were: the phenomenon of urban islands; the problems of the relationship between the natural and the cultural on the edges; and the tension between emptiness and urban vitality.

After this analysis, it was determined that the area requiring the greatest intervention was the axis between the Quebrada Seca bridge and the old port of Arranca-Plumas. Among the problems that are evident are the loss of historical memory, the deterioration of heritage properties, the disarticulation of the network of urban dynamics, and others. Finally, an analysis of the sector is carried out using the same methodology for urban phenomena. In addition, an assessment of the sector from the points of view of the urban, aesthetic, historical, and state of conservation is necessary in order to determine how the place should be intervened in and under what design criteria in order to generate the ultimate goal that was set at the beginning of an urban development based on heritage and historical elements.
